Talking Art in Maine, Intimate Conversations: Alan Magee

Talking Art in Maine is a series of intimate, one on one conversations between artist, Jane Dahmen, and notable artists and curators who have made a substantial contribution to the arts in the state of Maine. They are offered free to the public.

Alan Magee was born in 1947 in Newtown, Pennsylvania, and attended art school in Philadelphia and, in 1969, began working as an editorial and book illustrator in New York. In the late 1970s Magee began to concentrate on his personal paintings and in 1980 presented his first solo exhibition at Staempfli Gallery in New York.

Since that time, he has had annual one-person shows throughout the United States and Europe. In 1991 a ten-year retrospective, Alan Magee 1981-1991, traveled to four US museums. Archive, an exhibition of Mageeā€™s black and white monotypes opened at the Berlin Philharmonic Hall in November, 2000 and later traveled to the Portland Museum of Art, the University of New Hampshire at Durham, and the New England College Art Gallery.

About our host, Jane Dahmen. Jane is a contemporary realist artist whose recent landscapes explore the forests and coastal regions of mid coast Maine. Her work has been shown in solo and group shows both in the U.S. and abroad. One of her paintings hung in the White House in Washington D.C. during George H W and Barbara Bush's tenure, and several of her paintings were part of a show at the U.S. Embassy in Bosnia Herzegovina. Prints and posters of her paintings have been widely distributed around the world by UNICEF and Grafique de France of Paris, France. Dahmen was Maine Audubon's signature artist in 2005, and was a featured artist in the September, 2009 issue of Maine Home + Design magazine, and the Artists' Issues of 2011 and 2012.
